Mesothelioma is an extremely aggressive form of cancer linked to previous exposure to asbestos, it is almost always fatal. It has an extremely long latency period, sometimes take 40 years to develop in sufferers. Mesothelioma mostly affects the lining of the lungs, and can be easily misdiagnosed as a simple cold, as the symptoms are quite generic at first. Most Asbestos exposure can be linked to previous employment, and therefore employers are liable. Following a recent surge of complaints about the way in which war veterans are compensated after being diagnosed with mesothelioma, David Cameron has agreed to review the system. It currently stands that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is protected by law from having to pay out compensation to illness or injury suffered before 1987.
