Charity ride for injured cyclist left in coma

An organised charity cycle in Huddersfield saw a turn out in the hundreds as people from across Yorkshire raised money to support an injured cyclist who was left in a coma following a collision with a car last week.
John Radford (69) is currently still in a critical condition after his incident on the Huddersfield Road in New Mill. Mr. Radford’s two daughters organised the event to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance service, which took their father to hospital following the collision. One of his daughters, Helen Gorman, described the week surrounding the incident as “horrendous” and thought that by organising a charity cycle, more awareness could be raised concerning road safety.

Mr. Radford was the chairman of Huddersfield and District Cyclists, and was, at the time of the incident, in the midst of promoting a campaign that would see better investigations of road accidents. The route of the charity ride passed the scene of Mr. Radford’s accident.
Ms. Gorman said: “If this and the campaigning can stop any other family going through what we’ve been through this week, and what we are going to have to go through over the next few months if dad pulls through, if it helps anyone else then it will be worth it.”
West Yorkshire Police have arrested two men on suspicion of causing personal injury through dangerous driving, one man at the age of 21, and the other 43. They have both been released on bail.
